Understanding Pathways

Costs Snapshot (International Students)

Figures vary by course and city. Use these as planning guides and always confirm the exact fee on the university course page.

Tuition fees (per year)

Go8 universities: often higher, and many programs can be around AUD 45,000–65,000+ / year depending on course.

Non-Go8 universities: many bachelor programs commonly fall around AUD 23,000–44,000 / year depending on course and location.

Note: Professional degrees (e.g., medicine/dentistry) can be significantly higher.

Living costs (visa planning)

For student visa financial capacity, the Australian Government sets a minimum living cost benchmark.

AUD 29,710 / year (single student benchmark)

Note: Your actual spending can be higher in cities like Sydney/Melbourne depending on rent and lifestyle.

Work while studying

Student visa holders have work limits during study periods.

48 hours per fortnight during study periods

Note: Always check your visa conditions and your university guidance.

Health cover (OSHC)

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is generally required for international students on a student visa.

OSHC must cover the entire time you are studying in Australia.

Note: Cost varies by provider and coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about starting your Australian journey.

General

Many bachelor's degrees are typically 3 years. Some courses (e.g., engineering and many allied health degrees) are commonly 4 years. Master's programs are often 1–2 years depending on the course and university.
Go8 is a coalition of Australia's leading research-intensive universities: Adelaide University, ANU, University of Melbourne, Monash, UNSW Sydney, University of Queensland, University of Sydney, and University of Western Australia.
ATN universities focus on industry impact and applied learning. Members include Curtin, Deakin, RMIT, University of Newcastle, UniSA, and UTS.
VET (including many TAFE programs) focuses on practical, job-ready skills. Some students use VET for applied learning or as a pathway into further study, depending on the program.

Admissions

Direct entry typically requires a Year 12 qualification (or equivalent) such as A-Levels, IB, OSSD, STPM, AUSMAT, or other recognised qualifications. Requirements vary by course and university.
In most cases, IGCSE/O-Level (Year 11) alone is not enough for direct entry. Many students progress via a Foundation or other approved pathway first.
English requirements vary by course and university. Some students may meet requirements through prior schooling or recognised English results, while clinical placement programs often have stricter English standards.
Semester 1 (Feb/Mar) is the main intake. Many universities also offer Semester 2 (July) for selected degrees. Intake availability depends on the course.
Many universities may assess credit transfer (advanced standing) depending on your diploma content and grades. Credit decisions are made by the university and vary by major.

Student Accommodation & Dining

Usually not mandatory. Many first-year international students choose on-campus or purpose-built student accommodation for convenience and support, but off-campus rentals and homestays are also common.
Students under 18 must have approved welfare arrangements (guardian and/or approved accommodation) that meet visa requirements until they turn 18.

Employment

Student visa work limits apply during study periods. Work should support living expenses and experience, and students must follow visa conditions.
Eligible graduates may apply for post-study work options such as the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), subject to requirements.
