F-1 Visa Guide

Step 1: Determine Visa Type
According to travel.state.gov, students who plan to attend a US university or college are required to apply for a F-1 visa.
This is a non-immigrant visa for international students to live in the US while studying at SEVP-certified institutions. You can check if your school is approved on the DHHS website, or reach out to our counselors for guidance.
Step 2: Acceptance & SEVIS Fee
The process starts once you receive your Form I-20. This document includes your study details and duration of stay. We advise starting as soon as you receive it as the process is complex.
SEVIS Fee (I-901)
The mandatory SEVIS fee is US$350. Pay via the official SEVP website and print your receipt — it's essential for your interview.
Step 3: Complete DS-160 Form
The DS-160 is the essential online form for student visa applications. It requires your SEVIS ID, passport details, and a 2x2 inch digital photograph.
Save your DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode immediately after submission.
Step 4: Visa Application Fee
The MRV application fee for an F-1 visa is US$185. Once paid, your unique receipt number will unlock the ability to schedule your interview.
Step 5: Schedule Appointment
Schedule your interview at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Appointment windows can fill up months in advance, so early booking is critical to meeting your intake date.
Step 6: Attend the Interview
The interview confirms your intent as a serious, legitimate student. Bring your I-20, passport, transcripts, and financial proof.
