How to
Apply to U.S. Unis

From IGCSE and A-Levels to ADTP transfers, we architect your strategic application journey to the United States.

1

Know what your qualification supports

Understand how your current path aligns with US university requirements.

IGCSE (Year 11)

Some universities may accept IGCSE for entry routes, but many students choose a Year 12 qualification (A-Levels / IB / OSSD) for broader options—especially for more competitive universities.

A-Levels

Highly recognised for academic depth. Strong results in relevant subjects improve competitiveness, especially for selective programs.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Well regarded due to breadth + academic writing/research requirements. Ensure you complete core components (CAS/EE/TOK).

OSSD (Ontario Grade 12)

Widely accepted with the right Grade 12 U/M course mix. Because it’s continuous assessment, consistency matters across the year.

Transfer routes (ADTP / Community College)

Transfer applicants are often evaluated on college GPA + prerequisite completion + major alignment. Early transfer planning matters more than “just finishing credits.”

2

Build your university list the right way

A common, balanced plan is 6–9 schools total.

Reach
2–3

Very competitive schools where admission is uncertain even with perfect grades.

Target
3–4

Realistic matches where your academic profile aligns well with typical admits.

Safety
1–2

Strong chance of admission, but still a good fit for your goals.

3

Choose your application type

Deadlines vary by school; always verify your target universities’ dates.

Early Action (EA)

Non-binding, early result. You can apply to other schools and decide later.

Early Decision (ED)

Binding. Only apply if it’s truly your top choice. If accepted, you must attend.

Regular Decision (RD)

Most common route. Standard deadlines usually around Jan 1st - 15th.

4

Follow a realistic timeline

Year 11 / Pre-U (IB Y1 / AS Levels)

  • • Research majors and shortlist universities
  • • Plan activities that show genuine interest (projects, competitions, volunteering)

Year 12 (IB Y2 / A-Level Y2)

  • • Finalise list (reach/target/safety)
  • • Draft essays and request recommendations
  • • Submit EA/ED (if applicable), then RD
5

Prepare your documents

  • Transcripts (and predicted grades where relevant)
  • English proficiency test (IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo)
  • Recommendation letters (typically 2–3)
  • Essays / personal statement
  • Activities resume
  • Portfolio (design/film/architecture) if required
  • For tech: GitHub projects / visible work

Step 6: Submit, then track

Most universities use Common App, Coalition App, or their own portal. Track every document until marked “received.”
